Webinar Description: Our neuroengineering research uses techniques such as audiological assessments, electroencephalography (EEG) and other biosignals, and machine learning to translate fundamental scientific results into real-world solutions, particularly for individuals with communication impairments. I will give an overview of several recent and ongoing projects that bridge research and patient care. Our work seeks to restore and improve communication in all those who struggle to hear or be heard again.
Length: 1 Hour
Target Audience: Speech-language pathologists, otolaryngologists, nurses, occupational therapists and other healthcare providers specializing in dysphagia and head and neck cancer.
Learner Objectives:
1. Understand the basic brain mechanisms that support speech comprehension and production
2. Diagnose how different listeners fail to communicate
3. Treat communication impairments with assistive devices
ASHA CEUs: .1 ASHA CEUs will be offered for this free webinar. To receive ASHA CEUs, participants must attend full broadcast and complete post-webinar survey within 7 days. ASHA CEUs are provided by ASHA CE provider, STEP Community.
Note: ASHA CEUs are only provided for the live broadcast.

Professor Lee M. Miller received his doctorate in Bioengineering from the University of California, San Francisco and Berkeley. His academic training includes quantum physics, single-cell neurophysiology, and cognitive neuroscience. Since 2004 he has been a faculty member at UC Davis, presently in the Department of Neurobiology, Physiology, & Behavior and the Department of Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Miller serves as Technical Director of the UC Davis Center for Mind & Brain, where his lab investigates the neural bases of speech perception, speech production, and other sensorimotor and communication abilities, with an emphasis on clinical and consumer-oriented solutions.
