Description: Lymphedema is a common yet often under-recognized consequence of head and neck cancer treatment that can significantly impact swallowing, airway function, and overall quality of life. This webinar will provide speech-language pathologists with a practical framework for identifying internal and external lymphedema, understanding its clinical implications, and integrating evidence-based management strategies into practice. Emphasis will be placed on early recognition, multidisciplinary coordination, and supporting long-term patient self-management.
Learner Outcomes
- Identify the signs and symptoms of internal and external head and neck lymphedema and their impact on swallowing and functional outcomes.
- Describe the relationship between lymphedema and dysphagia, including key clinical evidence supporting its functional significance.
- Apply strategies for screening, referral, and supporting long-term management of lymphedema within the SLP scope of practice.

Speaker: Susan Rausch, PT, CLT-LANA, CWS, CLWT is a physical therapist with over 30 years of experience as both a clinician and consultant across a wide range of care settings, including outpatient, acute, and transitional care. Throughout her career, she has developed a deep passion for the treatment and management of chronic edema, lymphedema, and complex wound care.
Susan is a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) through Klose Training and is certified through the Lymphology Association of North America (LANA). She holds multiple advanced certifications, including Certified Wound Specialist (CWS) through the American Board of Wound Management and Certified Lymphedema and Wound Therapist (CLWT) through the International Lymphedema and Wound Training Institute. She has also completed specialty certifications in Breast Cancer, Head and Neck Cancer, and Pelvic Cancer Rehabilitation through the Physiological Oncology Rehabilitation Institute (PORI).
Susan currently serves as Manager of Clinical Services and Medical Education at Tactile Medical, where she leads clinical education and training initiatives for healthcare providers and patients. Her work focuses on advancing best practices in chronic edema, lymphedema, vascular health, and wound care, with an emphasis on improving patient outcomes through evidence-based care.
