This program is designed for the multidisciplinary team and all healthcare professionals who work with adults with tracheostomy. The program reviews the physiologic impact of a tracheostomy and teaches clinical information related to tracheostomy indications, timing, and procedures. Attendees will learn step-by-step methods to evaluate for use of a no-leak speaking valve to restore communication; to improve swallowing, secretion management, and olfaction; and to restore subglottic pressure, among other benefits. Advanced techniques for successful assessment and placement of a no-leak speaking valve inline with mechanical ventilation will be demonstrated, including review of ventilator settings and best practice procedures for use and alarm management. Attendees also will learn the importance of early intervention and therapy techniques utilizing a no-leak speaking valve for dysphagia and speech. The impact on mobility, infection control and weaning will be discussed. Case studies, hands on sessions, videos, and group discussion will be incorporated to complement the lecture and to enhance the learning experience.
